Göttingen—A City That Creates Knowledge

The picture shows the Old Town Hall in Göttingen. The large building is made of stone. It has many windows and a red roof. Next to the town hall is a beautiful fountain. In the evening, many lights shine. The town hall is a famous landmark in the city.

A university town steeped in tradition

Travelers appreciate the cosmopolitan atmosphere of this lively city, where students and international visitors shape the street scene. The blend of tradition and modernity is evident not only at the famous Georg-August University but throughout Göttingen. The Old Town charmingly blends the heritage of a medieval merchant town with the flair of a modern shopping destination. The lively side streets invite you to shop, while cozy restaurants and quaint student bars invite you to linger. The cultural offerings are exceptional. Theaters, orchestras, museums, and exhibitions attract many visitors.
Göttingen’s landmark is the Gänselliesel Fountain in front of the Old City Hall. Kissing is expressly encouraged here—at least after receiving a doctorate: Newly minted doctoral graduates from Georg-August University traditionally climb onto the fountain after their exams and give Gänseliesel a kiss. This is how Göttingen’s landmark became the “most-kissed girl in the world.”
