Discover a World Cultural Heritage!

Nestling at the foot of the North Harz Mountains, you will find the magnificent imperial city of Goslar, set amidst a splendid natural landscape. Towers soaring defiantly into the skies, numerous churches, colourful half-timbered houses and cobblestone streets make up the mediaeval face of the town. The former ore mine at Rammelsberg, together with Goslar’s historic centre and the Upper Harz Water Management System a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, is truly an original among European museums of industrial culture. Not far from the centre you will find the mighty Kaiserpfalz (imperial palace) with its unique art treasures. The many cafes and restaurants invite you to linger while the attractive shops in the historic old town will take you off on a shopping trip you have never experienced before.

Worth seeing

Kaiserpfalz – Imperial Palace

The Imperial Palace, built between 1040 and 1050 during the reign of Heinrich III, is a unique secular architecture monument. For more than 200 years German and European history was made here. In the St. Ulrich Chapel at the south end a stone sarcophagus with the figure of Heinrich III on the cover houses the gold capsule containing the heart of the emperor, who died in 1056.

In the late 19th century both the Palace and the Chapel were renovated extensively and the interior of the Palace upper hall was decorated with monumental murals by H. Wislicenus. The ground floor has an extensive exhibition of itinerant imperial rule. The Imperial Palace is a “must” for every Goslar visitor.
